We identified the atmospheric conditions that distinguish ordinary thunderstorms from four severe weather hazards, highlighting numerical proxies for their modelling in the Mediterranean. Severe winds occur in warm, unstable air (summer) or with strong mid-level winds (other seasons); tornadoes are favored by instability near the ground; large hail occurs when instability and strong winds combine; and short-duration heavy precipitation is favored by high moisture and slow-moving thunderstorms.

Using a Lagrangian moisture–temperature framework, we show that the 2022 European mega‑drought featured a strong decoupling between enhanced regional moisture uptake and sharply reduced Atlantic–Mediterranean precipitation contributions. Persistent anticyclonic circulation and subsidence suppressed convection and induced adiabatic warming. The abrupt termination highlights that large‑scale dynamics, not moisture availability, control drought severity.

We developed a new method to estimate daily land evaporation at high resolution across the Iberian Peninsula, explicitly accounting for irrigation. By combining satellite and meteorological data, we show that irrigation can strongly increase evaporation in agricultural areas. The results better match ground observations and improve understanding of water use. This approach can support farming decisions and water management at the regional scale, and will be extended to global applications.

Our study created a unique database that tracks vegetation health across Spain and the Balearic Islands from 1981 to now, updated every two weeks. By using satellite images from multiple sources, we provide accurate and consistent data that helps detect changes in vegetation due to factors like fires. This tool is crucial for farmers, environmental managers, and policymakers to monitor and protect plant life, ensuring better management of natural resources and agricultural productivity.

In 2023, Rio de Janeiro experienced record-breaking heat waves linked to climate change and El Niño. Our study shows that global warming made these extreme temperatures at least 2 °C hotter than in pre-industrial times. Heat-related deaths surged, with climate change contributing to one in three fatalities during the peak event. Without adaptation, future heat waves will claim even more lives. This underscores the urgent need for policies to mitigate climate impacts from escalating heat threats.

Agriculture may play a significant role in climate change mitigation. For this reason, it is necessary to have good estimations of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural activities. In this work, two different chamber systems to determine GHGs were compared. Our results highlighted that automated chamber systems, compared to manual chamber systems, are a powerful tool for quantifying GHG fluxes, allowing us to capture the large temporal variability that characterizes them.

Drought is undeniably one of the most intricate and significant natural hazards with far-reaching consequences for the environment, economy, water resources, agriculture, and societies across the globe. In response to this challenge, we have devised high-resolution drought indices. These indices serve as invaluable indicators for assessing shifts in drought patterns and their associated impacts on a global, regional, and local level facilitating the development of tailored adaptation strategies.

A gridded dataset on monthly precipitation over mainland Spain between spans 1916–2020. The dataset combines ground observations from the Spanish National Climate Data Bank and new data rescued from meteorological yearbooks published prior to 1951, which almost doubled the number of weather stations available during the first decades of the 20th century. Geostatistical techniques were used to interpolate a regular 10 x 10 km grid.

Sorptivity is one of the most important parameters for quantifying water infiltration into soils. In this study, we propose a mixed formulation that avoids numerical issues and allows for the computation of sorptivity for all types of models chosen for describing the soil hydraulic functions and all initial and final conditions. We show the benefits of using the mixed formulation with regard to modeling water infiltration into soils.

Short summary
This study synthesizes the multiscalar and nonlinear dynamics of drought impacts across Spain. It highlights the combined role of precipitation deficits and rising temperatures, showing the stronger performance of the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) over the standardized precipitation index (SPI) under warming conditions. Agricultural impacts respond to intermediate drought durations, while hydrological systems show delayed long-term responses. Severe droughts amplify impacts nonlinearly, with strong spatial variability affecting crops, reservoirs and ecosystems.
