Groß Glienicker Lake and Sacrower Lake in Berlin-Brandenburg are losing water. This study examines how people perceive associated challenges as well as their willingness and capacities to respond, using interviews, surveys, and workshops. Findings show the issue is not just environmental but deeply socially embedded, requiring more than technical solutions. Viewing hazards like this one as both natural and social can help create better, more adaptive strategies for managing associated risks.

Landslide events occur when soil, rock, and debris on slopes become unstable and move downhill, often triggered by heavy rain that reduces friction. Our research evaluates landslide vulnerability using a method that analyzes the spatiotemporal dynamics of landslide-prone areas. We've developed a statistical metric to track changing conditions in these regions. This approach can aid in early warning systems, helping communities and authorities take preventive measures and minimize damage.

Storm surges pose a significant flooding risk to coastal areas. This study presents a comprehensive approach to conduct the storm risk assessment and evacuation route planning in the Daya Bay Petrochemical Industrial Zone. It facilitates a thorough understanding for local government regarding the spatial distribution of road risks and aids residents in swiftly devising optimal evacuation routes, which significantly bolsters efforts in storm surge disaster prevention, mitigation, and contributes.

Mapping landslides is essential for understanding hazards and risk assessment. This study used a geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) approach with high-resolution lidar data to map forest-covered historical landslides in Jena, Germany. Optimizing the moving-window size for lidar derivatives improved accuracy, detecting more landslides and reducing errors. This method showcases the potential of lidar-based approaches for global landslide inventory and hazard assessment.

On 17 August 2024, a thunderstorm in Vienna led to a record-breaking rainfall of 107 mm in two hours. An analysis of the exceptionally long hourly rain gauge time series (since 1941) estimates this event's return period at 700 years. The extremity of the event is further confirmed by neighboring weather stations and rain-radar data. Linking the return period to atmospheric temperature shows that such events might occur more often with rising temperatures.  

This study assess the cascading impacts of the 2021 Tajogaite eruption on La Palma, Spain. By combining forensic techniques with network analysis, this research quantifies the effects of physical damage on the road network as well as the cascading loss of functionality and systemic disruptions to emergency services, health centers, agriculture and education. Result show the relevance of redundant infrastructure and landuse on effective risk management and mitigation of future volcanic impacts.
