Dear Dr. Emmer,

we finally received the comments of both of the referees, and now the public discussion is closed.
As you can see both colleagues rated your work as suitable for the target journal, but with some concerns: "The paper is a good analysis of the publication database related to GLOFs and might make a good technical note or editorial in NHESS or in a journal devoted to academic publication trends in the geosciences. It is beyond my expertise to say if this paper deserves publication as a research paper in NHESS."
It is obvious that such an overview on citation matrices per se is not NEW science, however, I definitely think that we should go ahead in this direction and therefore I kindly ask you to perform the necessary changes in the manuscript, as suggested by the referees (and already somehow accepted in your authors comments in the public discussion). Of particular importance here in my opinion is the information provided by referee number 2: "Readers of NHESS might be more interested in regional differences of GLOF including the characteristics of GLOF, research themes, and research methods." So could you please think a bit more in this direction when revising your paper? Firstly, also with respect to the overall concern (which is inherent when using WoS data, of course) that much work published in "grey" literature or just in journals not covered by WoS such as in many states of the former USSR. Secondly, with respect to the regional hot spots mentioned by referee number 2.
Generally, I would like to encourage you with this kind of work since I definitely believe that it provides some insights in the research on the topic.

Short summary

This study focuses on bibliometrics, geographies and global trends of research on glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). It shows how research on GLOFs has become topical over the past few decades (analysed period: 1979–2016). Issues such as (i) where GLOFs are studied, (ii) who studies GLOFs, (iii) the export of research on GLOFs and (iv) international collaboration are addressed.
