Different extreme value analysis approaches and fitting methods are compared with respect to their value for assessing the exposure of transport networks to extreme precipitation and temperature impacts. The merits of simultaneous analysis and combined plotting of various approaches are shown. The use of conditional performance metrics is proposed as an additional measure for assessing model goodness of fit. Findings of the study can be transferred to a range of environmental variables.

SeaConditions aims to support the users by providing the environmental information in due time and with adequate accuracy in the marine and coastal environments, enforcing users' sea situational awareness. SeaConditions consists of a web and mobile application for the provision of meteorological and oceanographic observation and forecasting products. The iOS/Android apps were downloaded by more than 105 000 users and more than 100 000 users have visited the web version (www.sea-conditions.com).
This work shows the progress and testing of an online–offline web-GIS application based on open-source technologies for landslide hazard and risk. It has satellite images as a base map in the offline mode and data collection in a centralized online database. The advantage of a mobile app coupled with satellite images over mapping in the office is improved identification of landslide type. This study was used for landslides in Nepal, but it can also be useful for other hazards like floods.
Accurately simulating and predicting the precipitation by numerical weather prediction is a difficult task for medium-sized catchments in semi-humid regions. This study shows that using multiphysics ensembles is a good method to reduce the uncertainties of rainfall simulation. This paper provides more guidance for choosing the physical parameterizations for accurate rainfall simulations of different storm types in semi-humid regions.
The Lorca earthquake (Spain; 11 May 2011) killed 9 people, injured over 300 and caused huge damage. The vicinity of buildings in the street was the most unsafe area for people. This article proposes a method to study individual evacuation after a seism. Applied to Lorca, it shows the spatio-temporal variability of individual exposure in the street after the shake. The results of this study are helpful to preventive actions in places with moderate seismicity, stressing the danger of the street.
This paper covers a recent research of education for children in the field of disaster risk reduction, particularly on floods and urban fires, a significant environmental problem in Indonesia and in many other parts of the world. Views were captured from children, teachers and non-government organisations generating recommendations to inform future policy decisions, particularly to scale up disaster risk reduction education in schools in Indonesia and may well be applicable beyond Indonesia.
