An important argument for the conclusion is the recognition of a regional compressive tectonic stress field in this area, which cannot lead to the formation of a fault graben, which needs a tensional tectonic stress field. Moreover, numerous unique geological features, sliding marks, and other relics of the ancient slide have been discovered in the field. A centrifuge model test shows that a deformation and failure process of "creep–crack–cut" and a type of "successive rotational rock slide" have occurred.

In this paper, we present the work done during an international cooperation between Italy and El Salvador, for implementing the multiparametric monitoring of the San Miguel volcano in El Salvador after its sudden unrest. In particular, the aim of this paper is to show and describe the installed geodetic network and to show, comment and interpret the very first detailed ground deformation data obtained on this volcano during an unrest period, useful for characterizing its unknown dynamics.

Two established methods for assessing the physical vulnerability of buildings to natural hazards (vulnerability indicators and vulnerability curves) are compared after beind applied at the same case study. The case study area is located in South Tyrol (Italy) and it is subject to debris flow hazard. The results indicate that both methods have advantages and disadvantages and should be used in combination rather than in isolation by practitioners.

Safety and efficiency of navigation can be enhanced through a better situational awareness at sea. We designed and realized an operational infrastructure for providing the navigators with optimal routes through various devices: PC, tablets, and smartphones. Sea-state and wind forecasts are used as inputs. Both motor- and sailboat routes are addressed by VISIR.

In this work we developed a new multi-model super-ensemble method to estimate sea surface temperature, an important product of ocean analysis systems. We find that ensemble size, quality, type of members and the training period length are all important elements of the MMSE methodology and require careful calibration. We show that with a rather limited but overconfident data set (with a low bias of the starting ensemble members) the RMSE analysis can be improved.

This paper presents a study on short-term ensemble flood forecasting for small dam catchments in Japan. Numerical ensemble simulations of rainfall from the Japan Meteorological Agency nonhydrostatic model are used as the input data to a rainfall–runoff model for predicting river discharge into a dam. Overall results are considered on some level helpful for decision-making related to flood control, especially as a supporting tool in addition to discharge observations and radar rainfalls.

Coastal flooding has severe socioeconomic impacts that are projected to increase under the changing climate. The present contribution reports on efforts towards a new methodology for mapping coastal flood hazard at European scale, combining the contribution of waves, improved inundation modeling and an open, physics-based framework which can be constantly upgraded whenever new and more accurate data become available.

Many anomalies before the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake were reported but not synergically analyzed referring to geosystem coupling. We investigated changes of multiple hydrothermal parameters in coversphere and atmosphere and studied 3-D evolution of b value in lithosphere. Quasi-synchronism of pre-earthquake anomalies georelating to particular thrusts and local topography are revealed. A geosphere coupling mode is proposed interpreting the function of CO₂-rich crust fluids on local LCA coupling.

We present the morphological changes experienced by Montegrande ravine (Volcán de Colima, Mexico) during the 2013, 2014 and 2015 rainy seasons. A total of 11 lahars occurred during this period of time, and their erosion/deposition effects were quantified by means of cross sections and rainfall analysis. The major factors controlling the E/D rates are the channel-bed slope, the cross-section width, the flow depth and the joint effect of sediment availability and accumulated rainfall.

Typhoon inundation forecast model for a gauging network is proposed. Model inputs are identified by cross-correlation and mutual information analysis. Optimal ARMAX model structures are searched for considering three objective functions, including the forecasting capacity in water level throughout the event, the accuracy in forecasting peak water levels and the time at which peak water levels are likely to occur. Characteristics of the resultant models subject to various objectives are examined.

In this study we analyze the economic consequences for two flood scenarios in the Po River basin in Italy, using three regional disaster impact models: two hybrid IO models and a regionally CGE model. Modelling results indicate that the difference in estimated total (national) economic losses and the regional distribution of those losses may vary by up to a factor of 7 between the three models, depending on the type of recovery path. Total economic impact is negative in all models though.

We provide a comprehensive lava flow hazard assessment for Fogo volcano, Cabo Verde before and after the 2014–2015 eruption based on probabilistic lava flow simulations. We find that the probability of lava flow invasion has not decreased at the location of two villages that were destroyed during this eruption, but have already started to be rebuilt. Our findings will be important for the next eruption of Fogo volcano and have implications for future lava flow crises elsewhere in the world.

One of the major challenges in snow avalanche hazard assessment is the correct estimation of release area size, which is of crucial importance in the evaluation of the potential danger that avalanches pose to roads, railways or infrastructure. In this study we show that snow depth can serve as a useful variable with regard to potential release area definition for varying snow cover scenarios. This may ultimately improve avalanche hazard assessment of transport routes or ski resorts.

This is a new study on the 25 November 1941 earthquake and tsunami, Northeast Atlantic. The tsunami was recorded from Morocco to the UK. We present a new epicentre location and use tsunami data to compute the tsunami source. Results show that the earthquake ruptured a segment of the Eurasia–Nubia plate boundary. Other segments of the plate boundary may rupture and generate similar events. These conclusions are important for tsunami hazard assessment in the Northeast Atlantic.

Meteocean and environmental forecasting is increasingly being used in operational decision-making in the sea for demographic, geographic and strategic applications. It also used to force the stochastic models used for search and rescue planning. The stochastic models have many limitations relating to the leeway calculation, and we tried to overcome them; we hope to contribute by providing leeway drift formulae for practical use.

A decline in damaging European windstorms has led to a reduction in insured losses in the 21st century. This decline is explored through understanding how and why a damaging windstorm characteristic has changed in recent years. For individual windstorm events, the area of damaging winds is shown to have reduced due to a significant decrease in extreme winds in north-western Europe. This decline is largely related to changes in a large-scale atmospheric circulation pattern in the North Atlantic.

An innovative fully operational 24/7 web-based decision support system, WITOIL (Where Is The Oil), has been developed to support oil pollution response. The system meets the real-time requirements in terms of performance and dynamic service delivery. Comprehensive computational resources and network bandwidth efficiently support the multi-user regime. The eight-language graphical user interface incorporates a great variety of user services, e.g., help and support, tooltips, and video tutorials.

During the creation and geomorphometric analysis of a landslide inventory, I stumbled across an issue: while the majority of the landslides are developed along the direction of material flow and have a larger length than width, there are situations where the landslides have a larger width than length. For distinguishing these long and wide landslides, I devised an algorithm that used the geometric processing of the bounding box and the geomorphometric analysis of a digital elevation model.
